A Step Forward

ASF History

In 1999, Lela Campbell was given a vision, which consisted of an organization that would assist men, women and children in taking their rightful place in society. There are over 60,000 drug-addicted people living in Baltimore City. These are people whose lives have been shattered like a puzzle, and they do not know where to begin to put the pieces of their broken lives back together. We came into existence to help these individuals put their lives back together. This would be done by providing a residential treatment facility that would not only be conducive to recovery from alcohol and drug abuse, but that would also assist in helping with other related life threatening issues such as homelessness, vocational and educational needs, mental health, physical disabilities and incarceration. Men and women would be given an opportunity to learn substance abuse prevention skills and life skills that would assist them in taking steps forward into rebuilding their lives one piece at a time. A Step Forward was incorporated in 2001. We opened the door to our first location in 2002 and later that year received our 501(c) 3, non-profit status.

ASF Mission

A Step Forward is a non-profit organization that provides housing services in a safe environment conducive to recovery from life threatening issues. A Step Forward is structured to meet the needs of an ever-changing community. Our goal, through providing programs based on self-improvement opportunities, is to return to the community a spiritually whole, self sufficient, productive individual who has hope and a future.

ASF Vision

A Step Forward desires to be viewed as a ministry that sets the standard for faith-based programs that guide its residents to live vital, productive lives.

This vision will be realized when A Step Forward has enough resources to never have to turn an applicant away and basic needs are always provided for. Our vision will also be realized when all residents have fulfilled their spiritual, educational, social, and vocational potential, thereby creating model citizens.
